I've got a 351w out of a 1977 Cougar. I'm getting ready to drop it into a ranger. I'm checking to see if I need to take this to a machine shop, or if I can clean it up myself and continue the rebuild. Piston heads and cylinder walls all appear okay, but the rust here is concerning to me. I think it's from the rings.

Clean it up it should be OK.
A stock '77 would be a low compression low power engine, so if you're after a real hot rod an OEM engine isn't the answer. Also, the 351W is a tighter fit in a Ranger where the 302 goes in without too much trouble.
All things considered, the extra work to get the 351W in there is not worth the effort if you are talking a stock motor.
jmo but search it out as far as power and the fitting of a 351W into a Ranger.
I'm planning on changing out the cam, putting some tighter springs on the heads, and adding an electronic ignition system. I'm gonna be changing out the intake as well, making it a 4-barrel. I'm not sure exactly how much that's gonna help, but would that make it at least a bit more worth it? I don't have much experience with the Small block windsor, most of my experience is on the FE block 352.
