Just another thought on not removing the hood, If you just remove the spring bolts and support the hood by other means you can lift the hood up until it goes against the cowl (put some padding in there to prevent scratching), which gives you much more room. Since you leave the strap hinges in place realigning issues are minimal. I held mine up with a rope from overhead. Not a great pic but here is how it looked when I did it.

I exchanged the 2 ton engine stand for the 1/2 ton stand yesterday. I also found a 2 ton HF hoist (single use) on C. List and picked it up today for $175. Not bad with current availability and prices. So I'm set. Some more prep before I begin.
In the old days as a youngin I would hunt down 3 nice green poles maybe 12 or more feet long and build a tripod. I have also done so with rough cut 2x4's, fir. The engine cherry pickers just don't offer room to put what ever on a stand, because the legs are in the way.
If you have the space for it the harbor freight gantry is an okay option though it would be nice if you could get 8.5 feet through it, and a stronger beam it could then go maybe 4k lbs easy, after blocking up to get the casters off the ground. Chain hoists offer the best control and you can do that while under the vehicle with the hood off.
This probably fits into the "No such thing as a dumb question" category.
I've decided to pull the 351W out of my '91 F150 super cab 4x4. I have purchased the HF 1 ton engine stand. I'm trying to decide whether to rent or buy a hoist. The HF one seems to have a good reputation. My question is related to getting the engine onto the stand. The caster diameters only differ by 1/2" so I don't see how the engine stand can be 90 degrees to the hoist. They are currently out of stock so I cannot go look at them. Does anyone know whether the stand and hoist will fit end to end such that the engine can be transferred to the stand? I've seen at least 1 video where this was a problem.
I'm not entirely sure i understand you question. But, I have a engine puller/cherry lift, that has the legs angled outward at the front. Its made by performance tools. And a generic 4 point engine stand. I believe made by Delco. i have done v6, and multiple v8 engine rebuilds. I maneuver the cherry lift to a point I can attach the entire engine stand to the motor, while it is on the cherry lift, and set them down as a unit, (if that makes sense), then disconnect the cherry lift. Hope that makes sense.
