So I am trying to choose a drop hitch without buying one and returning just do right the first time.
I have a 2020 F350 SRW stock height, wheels and tires size. I’ve narrowed it down to wanting the B&W tow and stow just trying to determine 5” or 7” drop. I had opportunity to slide a 7” drop in my receiver and it seems little low to the ground. I made a phone call to B&W and they said from the ground to the bottom of the tow and stow no less than 11”. With the 7” I’m at 13” off the ground. Looking at it though looks like I’d hit stuff but then again maybe not.
most my trailers I can get by using the 5” drop but I in the rare occasion I need to tow a lower trailer I don’t wanna be limited because I didn’t go with the 7” drop.
what would u do? Would u be ok with 13” of clearance from ground to hitch?
I would buy a 5” fixed ball mount, and a 7” fixed ball mount.
I found for my expedition, the 6” drop is good for most trailers, but a 4” drop was needed for the car trailer because of the suspension drop when towing heavy stuff
so I bought a 5,000 lb 6” drop and a 17,000 lb 4” drop. And all for less money than one of those adjustable mounts.
you asked what I would do. That is what I did.
same for the f250. Bought a 2”’ drop for most trailers and a 5-1/4” drop for the lower stuff.
I just purchased the B&W 5" tow and stow for my stock height 2016. I'm sure the 2020 is taller the 5" drop works fine on the 2016. I used the 5" tow & stow on a 2021 Ram and I had to drop the ball all the way down and only use one pin (which B&W does not recommend) to get my trailer level.
Just the other day I drove over a railroad crossing and the lower ball hit the pavement since it sits lower than the drop shank. I use the lowest setting and I have 10" of clearance.
I have a 10” Weigh Safe adjustable, it is 9” off the ground, 2020 F350 6.7 CCSB, needed it for a cargo trailer I have that has a very low floor. Also tow a 10k boat trailer, that one runs about 3” down, I leave it in all the time. Sometimes backing into a parking spot it will plow some grass, but never hits the curb. I don’t go off road, only touched once on a very steep driveway. So if you need the 7” drop I wouldn’t be afraid of it.
I have a 3" receiver on my 2017 F-350 CCLB. I bought the Weigh Safe adjustable height 6" drop ball mount. So far, it's been just fine for my trailering needs. If you don't already have a tongue scale, the scale in the Weigh Safe is handy.
