Hi.
I recently got a 2.5 inch level, 17 inch wheels with - 12 offset to replace the original 18s. Had it all done at a shop.
I Randomly get grinding and terrible metal knocking. Once I engage the 4x4 the noises stop right away.
Taken it back a few times, they replaced the hub accuator and checked everything but keeps coming back.
Any insight?. I don't want to put all the original stuff back on becauae the truck looks awesome and I just spent 3000 on this work.
Welcome to FTE, Etiennegreen, We're glad you chose our site!
They must have damaged the IWEs (integrated wheel ends) which are your hubs that engage the front axle. The level it self won't cause that, as many of us here have one. Did yo use reputable shop with a good customer service track record?
All IWE vacuum lines are in good condition and connected?
I noticed my passenger side line was not connected to the hub. Put it back in and tried to replicate the symptoms and didn't get the noise again... Fingers crossed that's all it was.

Why the -12 wheels? Do they rub when you turn?

I went to OK Tire, which is a well known chain in canada. we've taken other vehicles there and have largely been well taken care of. They haven't charged me for looking into the noise, and replaced the driver side hub actuator after i complained about the noise the second time free of charge. Today i found the passenger side vacuum line disconnected... perhaps everybody, including the shop just focused on the driverside since that is where the noise seemed to come from. i guess its possible it was always disconnected and nobody noticed? is it possible for the level and wheel setup to be adding stress to the vacuum line and popping it off ?
I reconnected the vacuum on the passenger side this morning and haven't heard the noise today.

I had the same experience. The tech left my passenger side vacuum line off. Seems like a common error for some reason...
Sounds like the fix was simple, which is good. Now post some pics of your truck!
Unfortunately the noise came back today and all lines were connected.
Passenger side looked like it might have been kinked or bent at sharp angle.. maybe that could cause the vaccun to fluctuate? Not sure any idea. ?
