4.2 v8.... Carb issues
The stinking no good 255.
This thing probably has a Variable Venturi carb on it, another difficult child of the wasteland between the performance era and the era of refined electronic controls.
A Ford or Holley 2bbl will bolt right on there. You will have to fiddle with it for choke, jetting, powervalve, float level, but you'll quickly be able to get it running, and with a little effort, running right.
Some of the misery explained:

Having said all that, if that 255 has other issues, use it as the boat anchor it is, and get a late Explorer or Mustang roller 302, put a small CFM carb on it and plop it in there. Double the power and probably better mileage.
Swerving suggestion.
When l was at the boneyard the other day l spotted at least 3 Bronco lls w V8 (assuming 302s). I was looking for l6 items so l didn't investigate and Explorers weren't even on my radar that day, but a small, roller-cammed V8 (provided l could mate it to my 4sp) would make my 85 F150 a lot more, uh... engaging... to drive.
Apologies for the thread drift/jack.

I didn't look close... l know nothing of, and won't be bothering to learn more, about Bronco lls. I was just surprised to see a 60° V-anything and jumped to the wrong conclusion. I was in a little bit of a hurry... l was supposed to be making a quick run to the grocery store...
