Variable Venturi Carb needs replaced?

I have '83 F250 Supercab w/ a 351. It has only 45K on it, but almost all those miles have been a pain in the butt because of the carb. Everyone agrees the best thing to do is throw the Variable Venturi carb in the dumpster & replace it, but no one agrees what to replace it with, no one wants to do it, no one can tell me what other things might need replaced if I do put on a 2bbl. HELP!

Variable Venturi Carb needs replaced?

It's been at least 10 years since I"ve seen one of those. Napa used to have replacements for those made buy Holley.

You can still get a carb to replace the VV, but they are pretty high priced. It is a Holley direct replacement.

I would guess that with a bit of researching and
a few minor adjustments, you could replace the VV
with a standard Motorcraft 2150 2V.
These carbs were used concurrently on the same
model type and engine type, so it shouldn't be
all that much of an adjustment.
(Bah ... who needs all that electronic crap trying
to drive for you anyway )

Variable Venturi Carb needs replaced?

I recently obtained the Holley service replacement and replaced the VV carb.

It was pricely (almost 500 bucks), but I need to maintain the feedback portion to pass yearly emission tests.

I would rather have torn out the electronics, replaced the distributor and carburetor, and gone with a setup similar to my 79 Mercury Zephyr, however that was about the same price, and alot more work that pulling off old carb, putting on new carb, MINOR wiring replacement, and MINOR fuel line bending.

First time through emission testing, passed (not real well, but passed). Drivability is 1000% better, I don't put many miles on it each trip, so it is possible that I need to do some tuning, but with this carb, you can. Starts right up hot or cold. Idles. Doesn't run on when shut off, seems to have better pickup, doesn't have the same flat spot it used to, I could go on and on.

I rebuilt the VV carb each year to get it to pass emissions, but this year I couldn't get it to pass, no matter what I did. All I could do was get it close.

Just do a search at napaonline.com for your vehicle/year and carburetor to find it.

One thing, it doesn't have the throttle posision sensor that the VV has, just the stepper motor thing, I don't know if I am going to take off the choke (I don't need a choke, there are possible 2 days a year that are near freezing for me) and make a bracket for the TPS and hook it up to see if it makes it run even better.

Price a remanufactured VV carb, it is more than the Holley. I couldn't find a local shop that could do the Holley because they needed the core to rebuild. The Holley is a regular carb with the stepper motor hung off the back of it. I have the technical information on the stepper motor, I can post it once I find it of you want.
