Hi all you Ford truck enthusiasts ! I am new to diesels and currently drive a gas F250 - '96 vintage. I am looking at buying another work truck and this is what I have found. I would like your opinion on it. 1999 F250 7.3 diesel. Banks system (has all the gauges, the trani was re done and has the larger pan and higher pressure and the rear end also. I think this is called bullet proofing , but I am not entirely sure. The mileage was almost all freeway pulling a 2 horse trailer. Mostly driven by a woman. Interior is nice but not pristine . It has dual cab and an 8' bed. I need that for work. It is a 4 x 4 , which is not a big deal to me. There is also some kind of switch you can turn on when going down hill that slows you down instead of burning brakes. That's about it. I think I can get it for $18K. They have used the same mechanic for years and he seems to know what he is doing. Your thoughts?
If your still out there you'll want to post this in the 7.3l PSD Super Duty forum. Or, maybe you can get one of the moderators to move it for you. You'll get more hits that way, our General forum is pretty slow:
From what you describe it sounds like a pretty good deal. The 7.3l PSDs (especially crewcabs with 4x4) fetch a high price because everyone knows they weren't handicapped by smog like the 6.0l. Usually, bullet proofing will include other improvements like head studs or an EGR delete (for the 6.0l PSDs). The engine braking function you mentioned was a function of the OD transmissions (E4OD and the later 4R100). These transmissions can be weak (especially in a lifted truck) so it's good it's been rebuilt. Good luck finding a rig.
