Can I put a 98 Ranger tach cluster into a non-tach 98 Ranger?
Before I mess the electrical system up I'm trying to make sure this tachometer gauge cluster install is going to be plug and play. It appeared that in order for a tachometer cluster to work in a non-tach Ranger it had to be from the same engine. After thinking I ordered a 4 cylinder tachometer cluster I got 2 v6 clusters but now I finally do have a tachometer cluster from a 98 Ranger 2.5 auto. My Ranger is also a 98 2.5 automatic but it didn't come with a tachometer. I needed to get another fuel gauge because mine isn't working and I figured it would be a good time to go ahead and do this. I also have more serious problems to figure out on this Ranger. However, I haven't been able to find a definitive answer on if it's just a straight up swap or is there more involved. Now that I actually have a v6 tachometer cluster and a 2.5 tachometer cluster comparing them they are identical down to the numbers on the gauges and even the printed circuit boards. So will either one plug in and work. I know the v6 and 4 cylinder tachometer is grounded different but wouldn't that be incorporated into the wiring harness from the factory anyway. Why would I need a 4 cylinder cluster if they are identical? I looked at as many post searches I could find and videos however, no one actually ever states any information about the cluster having to be from the same engine. If I have to add a wire or do any splicing I won't even try it. I just thought it appeared to be a simple swap over with no modifications. Can anyone let me know before I install this or toss it out?
