Having found a truck on the ground and made the deal this week, I decided yesterday that I am going to fly out and drive it home over the weekend. Flying into Indianapolis this evening, picking up the truck Saturday morning and starting the 1350 mile drive home. I have family to visit half way so I will make a couple of 10 hour days out of it. I haven't been on a new vehicle adventure like this in years and the timing worked out great. Excited for the trip, well except for the flying part but I figure I can hold my breath and bite my tongue through that part...
When I got my F450 I had found a great deal in Florida and was looking at airline tickets.
My wife's co worker is personal friends with the owner of san tan ford and said we can get family pricing. off we go to san tan ford. nothing in stock we want, he comes out with a window sticker for a ultimate king ranch truck and says he can get us in to this one for only $76,000.00 plus TTL doc fees xxx xxx xxx
he let his hand move and I seen the dealer, Jones ford Wickenberg. and the sticker price! $72,xxx.xx I leave san tan ford and while driving out of their lot I make a deal with Jones Ford.
Sounds like a good get away with a happy ending except for the airport/ plane portion. Besafe and enjoy the new ride.
Well the airlines demonstrated once again why I despise flying with them... delays, stupid rules, it is a horrible travel experience every time. Good new is, that part is over. Just a couple more hours and I should be on the road with the new truck!
I did the same thing, Wyoming to SoCal only stopping for fuel. Great way to get the feel of your new truck. Just take advantage of the daylight driving part to familiarize yourself with the various switches and their location. I only had a couple hours of daylight and found myself fumbling in the darkness.

So true, coming from my 2012 with few controls on the steering wheel to all the controls now on them was a small learning curve but with all the seat time no problems now.
That does sounds like a fun adventure. Hope you like the new truck. I got mine slightly used less than a year old from my dad who is a used dealer. Flew home to get it. He picked me up from the airport in it and after a few days visit drive it the 1k miles back to GA. So fun getting to know it and enjoy the drive. Have a safe trip.

Road trips are always fun tho.... Besides, after driving it home, you won't have to wait long before you can tow with it. Those 1000 miles will be closer. I hope you love your new ride.
I’m gonna say this now just in case it happens to you.
when I bought my new truck the steering box was tight and it took about 500 miles of my normal driving ( harsher than highway) to where it loosened up / broke in. Before i found others on this forum with the same experience of the steering breaking in on some of these, I was worried I didn’t like the truck ! The manifest station was slow/ not full return to center after turns.
so, of course get in a good test drive and make sure it is everything you want. But if on that long road home you feel like the steering is smooth but not quite what you want for return to center…. Just keep smiling and know it will wear in.
Got it home today. Had a great trip, no issues at all drives great. Ran 85 all the way across Kansas. Just about 1400 miles on it now, seems the front differential had an impromptu break in as well. Driving around the surface streets when I got to St Louis I heard what sounded like u joints clattering a little in the turns. Somebody had locked the hubs, I drove 250 miles on the highway like that... I did find out that I was getting 13.3 mpg running 80 with the hubs locked and I gained 2 mpg to 15.3 mpg, which seemed more in line with my expectations with them in auto where they should have been set. With my slower highway speeds around home I suspect I will be in the 16 mpg range for my driving cycle. The 7.3 is awesome, zero quality issues with the truck. I drove almost all in the daylight but I did get to try the automatic high beam system. Works pretty well but I do need to figure out how to shut it off, sometimes it is flashing too much. Here are a couple pics on top pf Monarch pass about 3 hrs from home.
