300 i6 timing issues

well, I got a third of the exhaust on, but my friend that was doing it with me made some bolt-on connections so it could go up in 3 pieces and I can't figure them out so I guess ill have to wait on him.

Well, make sure the base timing is set correctly without the vacuum advance connected.
If the base timing is correct and it still knocks with vacuum advance, the advance unit itself could be adding too much timing too quickly. This could be due to a malfunctioning vacuum advance canister.
