Weird Excursion, Hyrda, Pats theft issue

Bought 2001 Excursion with low miles 7.3, 4WD. After reading lot of blogs decided to go with a Hydra tuner instead of a Edge like my last 7.3 F250. While under the dash to get out the ECM I find a Ford key taped to a funny looking connector with a wire on it that had a Ford symbol. Figured maybe the previous owner had hidden an extra key under the dash. Kind of weird but an extra key is nice. This key had the large black plastic around the end. The 2 keys the previous owner had given me were just steal regular keys. I took the tape off and forgot about it and put the key on my keyring.

For the last week I've been fighting to get the Hydra installed. Kept looking like a Pats / Theft issue. Everything I read and the guys from Hydra told me to clean some more. It is really clean now. Finally took the Hydra out and it would still not start. The theft light kept flashing. Tried the reset 45 seconds and that did not work. Wife was listening to me cuss at it and said just put the key back, maybe it likes it there. That sounded dumb but I did it anyway. That cleared the Pats issue. Going to put the Hydra back in tomorrow and expect it to work. Anyone know what this would be? Maybe a way to get around using those special keys?

The special key is actually the real key with the transmitter in it to tell the anti theft its not a copy like your other keys that dont have a transmitter. That device in the picture is supposed to by around where the key goes in the ignition to make sure its a real key.

Looks like owner lost all but one key and instead of getting keys programmed moved the receiver and taped the last key to it. Then cut keys for the ignition which would save paying for programming. Your choices are to live with it, or get another key programmed and move the receiver back to the ignition lock. If you do the later you keys now with no transmitter will no longer work.

If you replace PCM with truck PCM you can use non chipped keys.

@vanavyman Does your Excursion have a remote start? If yes, that key was taped there for a purpose as explained above to bypass the PATS. On my previous 2000 Excursion, the shop had to do that in order to get the remote starter to work.

That will also need a full reprogramming of the PCM at a dealership.
