My Check Engine light came on yesterday. At the same time, I started to notice some weird behavior when accelerating, mostly from a dead stop in lower gears. There is a vibration in the gas pedal. The throttle/acceleration also felt a bit less responsive, but it's hard to say. When I got home I popped the hood with the engine running, and there is an intermittent sucking/air noise, coming from somewhere near the drivers side of the engine block. I couldn't identify exactly where the sound is coming from, maybe something buried further in.
Inspect the air intake boot, PCV and vacuum hoses, and intake for tears or cracks to identify the noise; however if you don’t seem to find anything, it could just be the air moving though the air box.
There was a problem with backfire blowing up the intake manifold. Truly.
I would check the EGR valve and the diaphragm that opens it. The PCV valve is also on the drivers side of the engine and could also cause a vacuum leak. Get a good bright light and shine it back in that area. I bet you can find the problem visually.

The acceleration issues and check engine light were caused by a cylinder misfire. It was just a bad coil, so this is fixed now.
I actually haven't checked to see if it's still making the sucking noise, I assume it is and is unrelated to the misfire. But if this is a problem I should figure out what's going on. I'll look at it this weekend.
