A couple of questions. I have a 2WD 91 F150 with a blown E4OD and a good E4OD from a 2WD 92 truck. I know the tail housing on the 92 E4OD is different than the 91 E4OD (the 91 has mechanical speedo). Can I put the 91 tail housing on the 92 to get the speedo to work? Also, could I just run the 92 E4OD in the 91 F150 and just not have the speedo hooked up?
If the 1992 output shaft is machined to accept the speedometer drive you gear you should be able to swap on the 1991 tail housing. If the output shaft is not machines for the gear you have to completely disassemble the transmission to swap the output shafts. The VSS signal generated off the speedometer drive gears goes to the computer to control when the transmission should be shifted, pressure, etc. The loss of the VSS signal would put the computer into the limp mode. Not a good thing.
I believe you have to also swap the bell crank for the shifter since the 1991 uses a linkage versus cable on the 1992.
The Vehicle Speed Sensor(VSS) is either in the transmission or the rear end.
If the trans does not have the gear drive for the VSS, the rear end should.
If the trans does not have gear drive on output shaft, the whole trans has to come apart to swap output shafts.
So I was thinking if the rear end has the VSS in the 1992, swap it, and of course the wiring for it, and the cluster.
Not sure if the whole truck is available though.
Both rear axles have the sensor so no need to replace the 8.8 rear. You’d rather rewire the truck and somehow get the ‘92 cluster to fit in the ‘91 dash than just deal with the tail shaft on the transmission?

If it doesn't work, it doesn't work. Just throwing options out there.

I'm not doing the swap. I'd rather see a 1991 E4OD swap, not a 1992, is what I would rather.
If the 92 E4OD doesn't have the gear drive, guess its a full trans rebuild to swap the output shaft.
My 94 E4OD had the exact same tail shaft/extension housing as the 91 and earlier, and very different output shaft.

So how do I tell if the 92 trans has the gear drive? Visual and physical inspection?
