I had a girlfriend that was a claims supervisor for a major insurance company. Her adjusters always offered clients low book value. When they complained her job was to check comps and negotiate a settlement. If you have an actual agent, talk to him about insuring for an agreed value. Make sure you save receipts and photos proving condition. Insurance companies are for profit businesses. They are there to make money, not your day.
I have standard plates and want insurance that will allow me to drive normally but protect the actual value and replacement cost. I have been watching the market and these trucks are becoming difficult to replace with anything except junkyard pieces... add in factory 4x4 and its more complicated.
Has anyone paid for a appraisal and then used that to keep the insurance guys honest?
Look for a "Stated Value" policy. You basically agree on a value with the insurance company and insure based on that value. I originally had that while I was still restoring the truck and kept it until I moved to SC. I think it's available through Haggerty and others. You'll probably have to shop to see who has the least restrictions. Mine had no restrictions but it was through Allstate who no longer writes that type of policy.
I had a twenty years old car in the past. Allstate agent made me drive it to his office to verify it was operational and all lights working. This was over thirty years ago. This was not a classic, just an old car. I can see now how people could scam the insurance companies with over values make s few payments, and classic vehicle "stolen" for total loss. Scam artists ruin it for those of us mostly honest folks. I'm guessing as meticulous as red60 is he also has a clean driving record and should be able to find a company willing to cover him. May not be cheap. Old vehicle, parts not readily available, no air bags or other modern safety features, etc.
Thats interesting John. I've had Allstate for the past 42 years with two 66 Mustangs, 60 F100, 66 F250 and 57 Ranchero and they have never questioned anything. I just need to report the mileage each year. I guess each agent can do as they wish?
I called my agent and asked if they have a trade partner or any recommendations and they said as long as the company is professional appraisal all will be well. I made an appointment with a certified appraiser and will let the group know how the process goes.
The appraiser did say its way easier to do this sort of thing on the front end vs fighting after an incident. He also mentioned only a few in my state are certified and he is one. They will come to my residence for the inspection.
