Small details to fix on the truck before going to Truckstock....

Truckstock is two weeks away. In preparation for that, I made a list of things to fix on the truck before the drive from Maine to Pennsylvania....you know, those little things that only take a few minutes to address:
Fix the loose choke **** plastic center cap.
Fix the fuel sending unit float arm to properly read empty.
Bend the tailgate chain hook so it doesn't rattle so much.

And oh yeah, might as well do this too............

Replace every freakin' oil seal in the entire truck from front to back and everywhere in between.

Just pulled the engine this evening.

That's good you're doing that, Tom. The PA Department of Environmental Resources and the US EPA have been investigating the oil slick in front of my house where I park my F350. So, it's good that Truckstock won't be bringing in oil leaked from out of state!

Abe, I was thinking of filling it up with Quaker State motor oil and gear oil and just letting it run back into the earth from where it came from in Penn. But it just isn't right. This truck leaks out of every seal and makes quite a mess. I have to do the rear main seal, the T-98's PTO cover seal, the rear differential pinion seal, and both axle seals. I have been soaking the NOS rear main rope seal for a full year in a jar of oil - procrastinating on this. My clutch started chattering and the rear brakes were fading from oil contamination - it was do or die.

I was motivated to bite the bullet and do it when I read Steve Harlow's thread about his F3 - he just jumps in and tears stuff apart no matter how much pain and effort it takes. I already broke some stuff pulling the engine. My book of handy curse words is open to page 27 and I've begun writing some new ones in the margins while I await getting a copyright on them. Now I have to get this all done in the next week or so, in time for road trials before the big trip.
Will keep you posted.
Tom

You're a brave man Tom! Do you have a back up plan? I could probably bring a few bags of hi-dry if that's what it would take to keep the Park Ranger Lady happy!

It was leaking like the oil pan was made from a wicker basket.

Last year I parked mine with cardboard under it. I’ve had the rear main seal replaced, we’ll see what it looks like this year.

Good luck Tom. You've taken on an ambitious project two weeks out from Truckstock.! My engine leaks oil too, but I am sadly lacking your courage and self confidence when it comes to most kinds of truck repairs. I remember it was a major struggle getting my engine in and out for a rebuild before the Kentucky Truckstock in 2017. I had trouble with even the easy things like putting the starter back in and getting the motor mounts installed correctly. Getting the engine and transmission to line up correctly and attach back together appeared to be an impossibility for awhile.

All that being said, I'd love to do what you are doing. It bothers me to have oil all over everything. I'll be anxious to hear a blow by blow account of how your engine install went.

Here is the underside of my 55. The 2 things hanging down... are they remnants of the rear main seal?

Can you see why the feds are after me?

My rear main seal also leaks......cardboard on the floor is a must!
Hopefully I will tackle that repair this winter. Having too much fun driving it now even if I do leave oil everywhere I stop!

I hadn’t thought about oil contamination on the ground. My truck doesn’t leak oil, it marks its territory, so I’ll bring some cardboard as well.

My friend’s 35 Chevy is so clean he says you can eat off of it, you can eat off of my truck too, provided you like the taste of motor oil.

Tom, when you are done take a vacation in Missouri and I will let you practice on my engine. I won't even charge you for the opportunity.
Mine drips a little, but I sure do burn through it fast. I think #4 cylinder runs on straight oil. I haven't dug into it yet, I just keep adding oil. Now, when my shop is done....

Thanks Dennis. That is an easier fix. Something I can do myself.

Any recommendations on the rear seal for the 226?
