I have a 2002 F250 light duty that I am trying to change the rear shocks on. What is the trick to get the old ones out? I have no air tools which always makes things more difficult. I welcome any suggestions.
I just bought an F250 and plan on doing alot of the repairs it needs myself. I picked up an air compressor for 100 bucks from the local classifieds but do not have any air tools to use with it yet. While at Pep boys, they had a air tool set for 69 bucks from Coleman. I hesitated buying it because I like sears tools so much but decided to give it a shot.
I had never used an air socket/ratchet before. When I saw I had 8 lug nuts and 8 rusted on axel nuts per whee, I put the air socket on it and couldn't believe how much easier it made the job! No busted knuckles and it was a heck of a lot faster than by hand. I am kicking myself for not investing in this 10 years ago when doing other auto repairs.
In conclusion: If you are just doing one big job, then find a friend with this equipment or rent it. (For just shocks you can just use the sockets and breaker bar, but it's harder.)
If you plan on doing occasional maintenance, do yourself a favor and buy the compressor, the rachet and socket set. It does not have to be new, there are some great tools out there in the classifieds and pawn shops. Hope this helps, C.
Yeah, maybe this should go under the what do you do section. But I just moved all my tools home and now I'm missing the shop conveniences. Air, lift, grease stocking parts blah blah.
I thought I would have my garage at home ready to work, but it didn't happen and trying to work in a home garage that is really used as a shed just ain't cuttin it! I was about ready to throw everything in there in the dump but my finance is going to try and sell some of it. Its a garage, that needs to work as a garage, not a 2 car shed!!!!
Ugh, now I gotta get all that crap I'm used to having AND organize the garage so it all works WITH a CAR IN IT...check that WITH MY TRUCK IN IT!!!!!
