Howdy, all.
I'm new to FTE and looking for a little firewall guidance on my 1975 F250 Highboy. I've discovered that the seam where the firewall is welded to the underside of the cowl has rusted out. (It seems as if this is a fairly common problem with these trucks.) The rust is so bad that the firewall is nearly disconnected from the cowl. I've searched high and low for a new (or used) firewall and am coming up empty handed. Anybody have any suggestions where I might find a replacement firewall?
Welcome to FTE, your best bet is to find someone with a parts cab in VA and go cut out what you need. I have 4 parts trucks/cabs, but I am in Missouri.
Thanks for the input! I'll definitely look into it. Just curious, where are you located in MO? I'm from a farm just outside of Columbia and get back to see family occasionally. Might swing by and check out your parts trucks. Again, my sincere thanks!
Polk County area, 2.5 hrs S/W from Columbia. PM sent, ck your PM (private messages) inbox via your User CP (control panel) and or see the top R/H corner? See your user name and private message counter? Click on it to go there.
Have you fully accessed rust in the rest of the cab? Typically if the the cab is rusted that bad in the location you stated there will be terminal rust in other areas. Might be better in the long run to get another cab....or even in the short run. No small feat to weld in a new firewall.
Pickapart in Stafford VA has one, another junkyard in Friendly MD has 3 and I recall a yard in Shenadoah called Richard’s that was full of them a few years back.
A cowl box replacement is a very big job, if you cannot find new replacement parts you get to cut the spotwelds X2. There is some kind of coating on cowl box that shouldn't be ground or welded without protection. Maybe Zinc, just guessing. Should be something in the search. My vote would be for same year or close cab swap, make sure the cab ventilation is the same system.
That's great info. Thank you!!
I've located a salvage yard that has several '73 - '79 F series trucks that I'm gonna go check out, and if one is in good enough shape, do a little surgery! Looks like I'll have to unbolt the cowl/firewall from the fenders and the fender aprons, and sawzall away! Sounds like I should bring a spot weld cutter and respirator with me as well!
Last major sheet metal replacement I had anything to do with was a late 80's Ranger roof, I know not the same but there was over 200 spot-welds to cut. Kind of why I did cab swap last time.
Well, before I drive two hours to the yard, I'm definitely gonna get clarity from my shop on exactly what they need. Cutting over 200 spot welds is definitely not in my future!!!
