56 Frame Weight

I have a 56 F100 frame that I need to transport cross country. The frame has a Corvette C4 IFS crossmember and rear IRS mounts installed which add maybe 100 lbs to the overall weight. I would like to buy a truck rack and load the frame on the rack for transport...any idea of what this frame weighs? Thanks in advance....

3/16" steel weighs 7.66 pounds per square foot. You could rough estimate one frame rail and get an idea..

Thanks John...I know that the frame can be lifted by two men which puts it in the 300 lb range. Most of the truck racks I have seen have a max weight of 500 lbs so I should be OK. I hoped that some member might have recently scrapped a frame and had a weight handy.

I would think that would make the truck really unwieldy on turns! Could you just put the front of the frame over the cab, and keep the rest in the bed?

The truck is a 2500HD with an 8ft bed. Truck bed will be full and will be pulling a loaded car trailer. I am not too concerned about instability but I am sure that it will have some effect on handling. Thanks for the tip!

I looked in some of my literature and based on the size and thickness of the frame rail a safe guess would be just over 4 lbs a foot. So doing some guesstimating, 32' of main rail and 5 5' crossmembers comes out to about 235 lbs. Your math may differ but it gives you and idea.

As far as the frame being on a rack no different than driving with it loaded with green lumber as far as top heavy goes. Your fine but I would suggest either upgrading the stereo or earplugs because I can guarantee that is going to sing of wind noise, hell the racks alone are loud when empty on everyone I have had.

Never thought about wind noise...I did see some write-ups on racks that specifically stated that the "over the cab" section did not extend past the windshield to help eliminate wind noise. Thanks...
