7.3 98 e350 Max Coolant Temp

Vehicle: 1998 (97) Ford e350 7.3 powerstroke
Problem: coolant temp gauge reads redline

This has been an on and off again problem. The gauge used to work properly and occasionally jump. Recently, as soon as the vehicle key is put into position II, or while running, the coolant gauge instantly moves to the max temp position even if the engine hasn't been started for days.

When the ECT sensor is unplugged the temp drops to zero.

I've replaced the ECT sensor, still get the same max temp reading which leads me to believe it's a gauge, ground, or wiring problem.

With an OBD reader the digital coolant temp reads "-40" while the dash gauge is maxed out.

Any suggestions for hunting down this problem?

Scanner's can't read coolant temp in these trucks as it isn't integrated to the PCM.

My guess is that your gauge decided to fail, my gauge sometimes sticks, if I hit the dash board I can get it to move to the right location.

You can read oil temp I believe. Which would be within 10ish degrees

Believe you're correct. Tried two different ECT sensors. Couldn't find any loose or frayed connection in the cable. Then tried a bunch of different resistances through the ECT cable which resulted in an on (max heat) or off (cold) temp on the gauge. Never in between. Thinking the gauge or cluster wiring is at fault as it gradually went between functional to full fault.
If it's not wired into the PCM than the coolant temp shouldn't affect driveability, so it's non critical.

Good suggestion. Deciding between this, gauge repair or aftermarket gauge if I get around to it.
