the engine was warmed up but the temp gauge has always run low like there is a cold thermostat or none at all, even the heater barely warms up.
Also the EGR is disconnected because I ordered the wrong long tube headers without the egr fitting and because they are made to order I couldn't send them back.
thanks for the help

The temp gauges on these trucks always read low... like barely making it it the N in Normal, but that is just a reading and doesn't affect the amount of heat generated if everything is working as it should. Do the rad hoses get warm? How about the heater core hoses? You could have a plugged heater core, or maybe the t-stat is missing.

If you wanted you could have a bung welded on.. I have done that with a few sets. If you don't care about that then it's OK to disable the system but fresh air cannot be allowed to get in through the EGR valve so it needs to be blocked and sealed air tight, but to keep the check engine off the valve must be present and go through the motions which means the sensor and vacuum line must remain connected. The simple way to accomplish both of those is to sandwitch a piece of sheet metal between the valve and intake with some gaskets or RTV.
