Guys,
A little confused here concerning valve rocker adjustment.
I am ready to change out lifters and want to be SURE the valves are properly adj.
I have read several old threads on here but some contradict others.
I have the studs with lock nuts as in the attached picture.
Question is are these set on TDC then torqued to 22# Also correct torque is ???
Some say the torqued preset are bolts.
Thank you in advance.
Alex
Before 1978 the studs were 3/8" and you had to adjust the lifter preload by going about 3/4 turn past zero lash.
1978 till 1984 the studs are 3/8' with a 5/16" upper threaded section so you simply torque the nut to the shoulder and if the head or the block has not been machined the lifter preload should be good.
After 1984 they went to a pedestal mount rocker arm.
On the torque-and-go rocker arms, I don't believe you even have to bring them to TDC. The torque is between the nut and the shoulder on the stud, and is only to keep it from backing off. TDC would be irrelevant in that case.
I would at least be sure to get new hardware with the rocker ball and hold down nut. They do fatigue over time. They're also not all that expensive.
