Hey guys. I purchased a 2017 F150 with the 2.7 ecoboost last year. I just hit 50,000 miles and I’ve been thinking about preventive maintenance before I have any problems. I’ve already got a set of plugs on the way so that’s easy enough. I also started researching catch cans and I’ve come to the conclusion that while it may not be necessary it certainly can’t hurt anything and might very well be a big help since my engine is just direct injection. My question is do I need to install a can on both banks? From what I’ve seen it seems like passenger side is the only one that really catches oil. My next question, is it worth it to pay the price for a mishimoto or one of the high end cans or will an amazon can with baffles do just fine? Seems to me like the technology is not complicated enough that’s it’s worth paying the extra when I can buy a cheaper one and route the hoses myself. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
Catch cans aren't very popular here. They do catch some oil, but not as much as you would think. I think they catch more buyers than oil. Changing the spark plugs is advisable at 50k miles. I would also do the coolant, transmission, transfer case and differentials.
Thanks for the response. I’ll definitely look at all the other fluids as well and go ahead and replace if I feel the need. I went to the ford dealership today and they told me that ford is now recommending the sp598 spark plugs for the 2.7. My truck is stock so I didn’t see any reason on insisting I want the 542’s and these have the same heat range as the 578’s. Anybody have any experience with this new plug?
Congrats on the 2017!! So, dependent on your region of the country, these catch cans can freeze on you during the harsh winters. So, something to be mindful about. If going to install one, then at the very least buy a setup that has prefab hose with direct connect FORD style connectors. But, if you run TIER 1 gas and high quality full synthetic oil, then I'd pass on the catch can setup. Do the oil changes at 5k and you should be fine.
All fluids should be changed (as already mentioned) unless you know the history of the truck. Plus, filters...
