Vin decode 74 F600
Today I just went out and bought a new truck. 74 F600. I’ve been looking for one for awhile and finally found one with no rust, and only two dents with a dead motor.
I know most of the history of the truck, and that it has a 330HD, 20,200 gvw, 2 speed rear.
I would like to know a couple things if possible.
1) What does the vin all mean - F61DCU01098
2) What is the GCWR of these. I’ve heard a bunch of different amounts (anywhere from 20k to 35k). I’d just like a solid # if possible so I know what I can legally tow. Either way I have to stay under 26k because I don’t have my CDL yet.
thanks for the help.
Congrats on the new truck. Is there a metal tag on the driver's door with the VIN and other info on it?
It will look like this:
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...d7aa888b83.jpg
D = 330 2V HD (Large snout steel crank, all other FT features)
C = Ontario Truck Plant. (MPC says all after 9/69 should be V, Kentuck Truck Plant. I can't explain)
U01098 = 1974 series number.
If the tag is there, the GVWR will be there along with other info.
For this era of truck, the MPC (Master Parts Catalog) shows a GVWR range of 16,000 to 24,000 for F600s. It looks like 24,000 was the tops for the '64-'72 trucks as well, even those showing air brakes.
From the Washington State Commercial Driver Guide:
https://www.dol.wa.gov/driverslicense/docs/cdlguide.pdf
"...A combination vehicle with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, provided the GVWR of the vehicle(s) being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds...."
Check down the page for the exemptions in your state.
So you can pull a trailer with a GVWR up to 10,000lbs.
Your truck with a load plus 10,000lbs will be a challenge power wise, and the trailer brakes will need to be 100%.
