Hello everybody. I got a 1962 ford f-100 about a month ago. This is my first vehicle (im 15). Its got a 292, custom dual exhaust w/ 32'' glasspacks . I have new 31'' radial sxt mud terrain tires (avon) on some 15 in chrome rims. Can you guys give me suggestions on stuff for this pickup. My dad can help me a lot, but he's at work a lot. I got a sun tune 2 tack for it. I set the red line at 3500 rpms.
Thats awsome my first vehicle was a 63 f100 (now i have a 89 f150 too) and i am 17 so i know how excited you are. I sujest you get a 4bbl intake and a 600-750 carb that will make that 292 scream ! other then that you sound like you have it prity much under control. Just work on stuff you can handle in the drive way (I know how money is) and NEVER do something for the resale value or you will hate it. Aso get a bunch of stuff to personalise the truck like logos, seat covers whatever because you have to show everybody you got something different and great and they damn well better not forget it.
Enjoy JJ
yeah, now i got jobs that i can work at every weekend so the bucks are rollin in . I have got the front mud flaps on so far. I havent got the back ones on yet. I found out i have 2 differnet fenders. The 2 wd and the 4wd ones are different (oh yeah i have a 4X4), and i have one of each!!! i have to find another 4wd one some time and replace it, but anways. And i am never gonna sell this baby, i love it to much . If anybody tries to take it, . Yeah, i have to get my tires paid for before i can start buyin a buncha stuff, but after that.....
Hello there, 1962_Fords_rule ! It sounds like you have a great truck, something guys twice your age would love to have! If you drive it carefully, and keep working on it until it is the way you want, you will get a tremendous amount of enjoyment out of it, for a long time to come. I have a 62 Stepside that I bought less than a year ago, needing a ton of work. I do it a bit at a time, traeting it as a hobby, not work. I have had more fun, and gotten more "Thumbs up" from other drivers and pedestrians than I ever thought possible. I learned along the way (started on them at 14, am 55 now), that often the factory did a pretty good job, and the first step with many vehicles is to "get it back to stock" - at least the mechanical stuff. A 292 is a good motor - start by doing a thorough tune up, and you should have quite a bit of power. Unless someone has changed distributors over the years, you will have the old "points, plugs, condenser, cap & rotor" tune up routine to learn, but it isn't that tough to do. Good luck with your Great old truck!!!
Welcome to FTE! Keep it tuned, drive it easy, take care of this old Ford and it will take care of you. Fix the safety stuff first, like brakes, lights and glass. Take your time and plan out what you want to do and calculate the cost. Collect some basic tools and publications and learn as you go. We can help! I sure as heck would not put a 4V intake and carb on this old beasty until I'd rebuilt the bottom.
i agree with william what i ment by put a intake and carb on was that when you do your rebuild other than maby a slight overbore and hardened valve seats that would be about all i would change. Ford did a good job with the 292 and it does not take a lot to get this little engine to diliver alot of power.
Thanx for the help and praise guys. Could you guys please give me some links to possible hop-ups for my engine??? Also could ya give me a list from most to least important things to buy and how much each will cost. Thanks a ton
EDIT: o yeah, how high can i rev the engine?? Right now i have the red line on my tach set at 3500

62! I admire your enthusiasm. My Grandson bought an arrest me red mustang. First thing he wanted to do was add nitrous, right after the sterio of course. A couple of tickets, a brake job and a busted cylinder wall later he sold it and went into the Marines. My point is take it easy on that old Ford, make it safe, have fun with it and when the money is available build the engine you need. If you pound on that old Y block you will break it.
