I'm always looking for other opinions. In search of a camper. Don't have one right now. Looked at hard side and pop ups. We're leaning towards the travel trailer right now. Talked to some friends of ours who have a pop up and they said it's a little more maintenance intense. Not to bad. Any pros and cons out there? Don't want a RV or a 5th wheel.
What are the most important things to you in a trailer of any type?
Amount of space inside the trailer?
Its cargo carrying capacity?
Amenities (shower, stove, bed size, fridge, etc...)
Where will you store it- storage facility, home, friends, etc...
Fuel mileage when towing?
Can your vehicle tow what you want?
I can go on and on. Personally, I wanted something that gave me plenty of space, allowed friends to go with me, and was comfortable above all. My tow vehicle could tow plenty, so that wasn't a big concern. Fuel mileage, maybe a little, but it isnt like I tow everyday, so no biggie here.
Personally, I say go with a travel trailer. I have a 31 foot Springdale with dual slide outs (bedroom, living room) and I love it.
However, if you space and fuel mileage, consider a collapsible travel trailer, gives you good amount of space, but folds down when towing for increased fuel efficiency. The drawback is these do not have slide outs and are not cheap.
I do not like the pop-ups due to the small space. I especially do not like the ones with cloth. It mildews, bugs eat it if you live in a warm, moist environment, and provide little security if you leave valuables in it while you are away.
Whatever you decide, at least you can get away from work, or whatever else you want. If you have more questions, ask. Enjoy!
how many adults / kids do you want to sleep? my family had a nice coleman pop-up. it was great with my parents, me and my brother. the bed on the trailer hitch side was larger, my parents slept there and me and my brother shared the bed on the other side. the table also folded down into a bed. but it was a pain in the neck taking it down and putting it back up in the moring for breakfast. it had a fride, propane stove and heat. no a/c. no shower and only a small porta-potty. it was great for weekend trips, 1 or 2 nights. longer if you are staying at a nice camp ground with bathrooms and showers. if you are looking to have more people, or stay for longer than a couple of days you should look into a nice size trailer.
just another thing to think about - pop ups suck for bad weather. being couped up inside, there was barely any room to move around.
#1 - they last ~forever~ if properly maintained.
#2 - fixeruppers can be had, and most parts are still available for 1943 models on up.
Did I mention you can practically pull the little ones like mine with a bicycle? . . . well, when it's not full of camping junk, anyway
I am sad to report this jewel found a new home, We did not want to sell it, but were made an offer it would have been just plain goofy to refuse. Yes, I am in the market for another one - I miss it dearly.
This one guy I know had 2 of them popups. He had his first one in the up position and some nice wind came along and did a number on it. And the second one, well same story. I got me a used travel trailer. If you get a anything used you will most likely have to do something to it. I had to replace the black water tank and patch the grey water tank and replace some minor drain pipes. But unlike a car I found it to be easier and cheaper. And if it dosn't have air, you can find a air unit for around 600 and put it in. Most trailers are pre wired for the air units.
