Ok my dads truck needs a lot of work. Its a 1997 4.6L. It starts really hard, whirls over and starts but stutters at about 400 rpm for about 20 seconds then slowly smooths out. Then it idles fine, but when you mash the throttle, the engine stutters and won't rev up, just stutters. But if you slowly lean into it and go easy on the pedal you can redline it and it sounds fine. I kinda think its only runnig sorta kinda on select cylinders but i don't know. Any help would be great!! Oh and btw will a 1998 or newer 4.6 swap in cleanly with a 1997?? 5spd manual trans....
Have you tried replacing the fuel filter?
What about plugs and wires?
I'd do those things first.
Does the problem (hesitation/stumble) occur when accelarating in Park/Neutral. or only when in Drive?
How many miles on the engine?
Maybe dirty fuel injectors?
Tune it up, clean the mass-air sensor, clean or replace the IAC. Search this site for these two items, there are good instructions ondoing both here at FTE.
