I had this info in a file forever, and of course when I need it ... poof. Anyway, can someone please show me a thread or vid. link to how to upgrade a dent non intermittent switch to a latter year intermittent?
You also have to mount the module with a screw. There are a couple of options once you get your head under the dash to have a look.
I think either LMC or Bronco Graveyard has them new. Otherwise jy or ebay.
The switch itself can be purchased from several vendors.
Thanks John89. The funny thing is that I've been grabbing spare parts for years and have had a spare switch/module in the garage forever. But it was sitting for so long that I almost forgot I had it and paid for a new oe switch. Time for a refund. Also, I found that O'Reiley's wants $70 for a non intermittent switch!! I checked on LMC and that same switch was $15, plus $6 postage. What a difference! Fortunately, I don't need either.
Remember you need a delay switch or at different w/s wiper switch when you put in the delay box. It will have a long sweep like adjustable delay ability. The ever elusive intermittent wiper control box and the splice wire # is. D3TZ-17C476-A (replaced D1ZZ-17C476-A) Intermittent Wiper Governor.
Old info, but always good info thanks to Number Dummy. Two differenttypes of windshield wipers, two differentwiper switches.
Two speed wiper switches have a low & high speed. Intermittent (delay) wipers were optional on 1973/79 F100/350's and 1978/79 Bronco's. Intermittent isnotanother name for low speed! DOOZ-17A553-A.. There are TWO different intermittent wiper governors. 1973/77 is one type, 1978/79 is another. D3TZ-17C476-A(replaced D1ZZ-17C476-A) Intermittent Wiper Governor / Obsolete
Well, I finished the up-grade. I was in the dash changing the odometer, and took the opportunity to do the wipers while it was all apart. It was very easy. Thanks for the help, guys.
Did you roll her back to zero before trading her in?
No, I didn't. It is/was a used odometer, so I simply wrote down the mileage on the old and the new one and will do the math if needed.
I have to admit I have been fondly looking at the new dash panels and gauges. I imagine that when'if this panel fails, I'll swap over to a new panel with AutoMeter gauges.
I noticed an aftermarket kit in a sealed box I bought in the '80s to convert to intermitten wipers, it has a box with a **** to adjust delay. Don't know if still made.
PSA: The governor box and switch can be found in Ford trucks up to 1991. Always cheap at the boneyard.
Hey, don't give out that secret! lol. That's what I do, pull the intermittent switches and governor boxes all the way up to '91. I haven't rounded them up from the wrecking yard in quite a while though.
They were a lot more common in the late 80/early 90s. The last one I did I seem to remember having to move one of the washer wires in the plug, sorry if it's already been said.
My truck is a '75. Original switch was low and high and off. I did not change any wire, but rather simply unplugged the old and plugged in the new, and away I went. I did buy a new oe **** from LMC for $15.
Aside: You know, the charge of shipping has to be hurting business for LMC. Now, when I shop their products, I first check Ebay and Amazon to see if I can get paid shipping. LMC shipping charges are way high. Take this wiper **** for example. The **** cost $9.99. Shipping added 50% of the sales price to the order. It's not as though LMC has super quality stuff either. The majority of their stock is cheap Chinese made knock offs.
When I converted mine, I went through three delay boxes. The first one was really slow. On the fastest setting, it took over 15 seconds to cycle. The second one worked normally, but had total failure after a few months. The one in the truck now works ok. It did temporarily fail once after I had been using it on slow cycle for several hours. After I let it cool down, it returned to normal function. If it wasn't under the dash and hard to get at, I'd spend some time rigging up a PWM (pulse width modulator) They don't generate heat!
