Zf5 help please

Alright so long story short I was pulling my gooseneck home With my 97 and my e40d decided it didn’t want to work anymore and spread itself all over the road well I have a complete parts truck minus the engine to do the 5 speed swap I have clutch and everything I need besides the flywheel regardless I have a early 99 super duty I want to know if it’s possible to use the flywheel off of it I can’t find a thread or any info on it so yeah is it possible or did they change something to where I can’t use it?

Buy a new Luk kit for $300ish. Comes with new flywheel too. Figure if you can have that huge dude surfaced it will be easy $50 or more.

IMO I would sell it off and have a solid E4OD popped back into the truck.

IIRC the Zf6 and zf5 flywheels are just a touch different in size. With it being an early 99, is it one of the odd bird 5 speed trucks? I would just get the clutch kit for 97. Do you know how many miles are on that clutch? I am not a huge fan of reusing a clutch unless you know the mileage and how it was used. It is pretty cheap insurance to just get a new one.

Sorry the EOD died on you. They can be made pretty strong but I also understand your frustration.

Exactly, installing a used clutch and an unknown shift quality trans is a fools errand to me.

Syncros take a beating when people try to drive them like a little T5 and the reverse gear dogs are usually ground down a fair amount due to incomplete apply into reverse.

Wow. I gotta disagree. I put a zf6 in mine and it's like a whole different truck and no more transmission problems. Of course I'm old school and don't believe in automatic transmissions. If there is a question about the condition of the zf5, check the oil appearance or even have it analyzed.

Not sure what the "wow" factor is. Eric's advice was pretty solid. While I agree that a manual is the way to go in any tow rig, it is a LOT less work to install what the truck already has, and if enough coin can be had from selling the other, a BTS could solve the issues on the E4OD.

OK, I agree that the Wow is misplaced. It was just the first time I've heard anyone prefer an E4OD over a manual but maybe I'm out of touch.

Six speed makes more sense. Five forward gears plus reverse and bull low. The five speed has four normal gears plus reverse and bull low. To me no real advantage unless you pull all the time like some guys.

Most used transmissions are wornout unless documented reman such as my ZF or you have service records from crazy owners like us. You can buy a reman 4R100 for my 01 Expedition for about $1800 with converter. It is just a stock build, but hey, it has warranty and will get you on the road fine. Pop on that 6.0 cooler and a shift kit plus a low stall w billet cover, rock on.

The ZF five speeds certainly are not city friendly to shift. The six received dual cone syncros on a few gears (second and third of six fordward) which should reduce effort and rev matching necessity.

But my biggest deal is most auto to manual swaps are performed poorly. Not saying the OP would do a poor job, but many do and cause MORE issues than prior auto failure.

Now that is probably a very valid point that I have not thought of. When I did my ZF6 conversion I had to do some less than delicate massaging of the floor pan since the ZF6 is a little taller than the E4OD. Also had to do some work on the rear transmission support/cross member. Then the wiring harness mods, which thanks to numerous threads here worked out well.

Overall, the zf6 swap did require a lot of screwing around, which is sort of what I do. The end result has been perfect and I'm very happy with the zf6. I may have been lucky with the used transmission, when I drained the old oil out of it, there was absolutely no sign of any metal and the transmission is quiet and shifts smoothly.

After thinking about it, I tend to agree that replacing the old E4OD with a properly rebuilt and upgraded E4OD may be the best way to go.

I am curious how poor the M5OD is going to shift in my 4.9. Fluid came out black with filings on mangetic drain plug. I will stop whoring this poor guy's thread and post a photo of it in mine for laughs.

Either way, I wish the OP best of luck which ever way he chooses to proceed.
