Fuel pump
Going to be replacing the fuel pump on my 97 F350 7.3. Was told that the fuel pump could break off in the top of the engine when removing it and it would end up inside my engine. Then was told it would just fall down into the oil pan, I’m at a loss here and I’m not sure what to believe. So was wondering if anyone else has had this happen and if so where will the broken off part of the pump end up “ IF “ it does break. Thank you in advance!!!

The thing you have to watch for is the plunger in the bottom of the pump. Disconnect the hold down bolts and fuel lines then turn the motor by hand. You often will see it pop up a little bit and it’ll be real easy to get out. Mine was anyway and it had 400k on it no idea if the pump was replaced or not before then tho. If the plunger falls it’ll go to the oil pan. Just get a strong magnet and stick it to the bottom of the pan and leave it for good

Basically, there's a plunger with a really tight concentric tolerance that is actuated by the cams. The lift pump also likes to get stuck in the valley, leading people to "wiggle" it back and forth to break it loose. And break it does! Sometimes the plunger will snap off into the valley and fall into the oil pan, other times it will separate the plunger from the shaft and the plunger will fall off. Check out powerstrokehelp on youtube, Bill and the guys do fantastic work and made a really good video about how to safely remove the lift pump. IIRC, they used some tool or some fancy technique to pull STRAIGHT UP on it.
