PCV/Breather

Recently had my 302 rebuilt and was working on my breather setup. Without thinking to much I ended up buying this Edelbrock breather. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/e...iABEgL9yfD_BwE

I didn't realize that it wasn't a PCV valve until I got it. It basically just has a small baffle and a foam filter inside but is otherwise a straight through design. I have it installed on the passenger side valve cover and hose hooked into the base of my Street Demon carb. I have a different style breather on the driver side valve cover to.

This obviously messed up my carb tuning a bit since it is sucking a fair amount of air through it at idle, had to richen up the idle mixture screws. But my question is, does this type of setup have any ill effects on the engine, or efficiency? Is it better to swap it out for an actual PCV valve, since they aren't expensive anyways. I'm mostly just curious now.

Swap it out for the OEM pcv and grommet. What you have there now is a giant oil sucking vacuum leak.

Okay thats all I need to know! Will find a PCV valve for it next week. I don't have OEM valve covers anymore so I will have to figure out what will fit.

x2

The value of correct PCV valves is often overlooked (in the same way that OEM hot/cold air intake systems are).

How would one figure out the correct PCV valve needed? I am not dealing with a factory spec 302 anymore haha.

How far off of stock are you?

Just start with the OEM one. What you have now is a serious fubar.

Its not a crazy engine build so I'm sure the OEM will be just fine. Will start there. Thanks for the info

Put the original PCV valve in place. And make sure your aftermarket valve covers have shields or baffles under the grommet area inside the cover. If they don't, the PCV valve will suck a lot of oil also, making the engine use a lot of oil.

Got to love after market valve covers

On the PCV just get the one for your year truck / motor.
As said there needs to be a baffle under the valve or it will suck up oil and that may be an issue with your covers?

Now the PVC is in 1 cover and you need fresh air coming in from the other cover.
That breather you have now could be used on the other side and a hose run up to the air filter where there is a breather filter in it that filters air before it is pulled into the motor.

My valve covers are baffled so I am good there.

FuzzFace that is not a bad idea for the breather. My Demon air cleaner has spots for connecting that so I might do that later on. My current fresh air breather just has it own filter.
