I have a 1998 F150 extended cab with the 4.6, 5 speed manual and manual 4 Wheel Drive. Saturday a friend of mine and I spent 10 hours trying to get the transmission out and we could not. All the videos online either show 4x4 with an automatic or 2x4 with a manual. I could not locate a video with the combination I have of 4x4 with a manual. It appears that there is a fin sticking up at the apex of the bellhousing that is hitting the firewall before we can get it moved back far enough to clear the crank shaft. We removed all cross members and mounts and removed the drivers side of the exhaust system to gain access as the drivers side exhaust crosses over to the passenger side at the back of the transmission before the transfer case.
I appreciate any advice as I would like to get this back together as soon as possible.
The transmission and transfer case are supported by two jacks as the intent was to pull it, do some work on it and move it back into place.
Without seeing what you have going on can you drop the transmission and transfer case to change the angle, maybe a jack to lift the front of the engine to change the angle? There is some wiggle room there after doing that. I had an 02 4.6 5 speed that I pulled the trans out of but I did have it on a lift with a trans jack but I don't remember having much trouble. That was many years ago but I don't recall anything special needing to be done. Just a thought for ya.
Thank you and unfortunately I do not have much more information. I found out late last night that my friend whose garage my truck is currently occupying was able to get the tranny out so I am also set. Thank you
