Beginner here. Need it dumbed down to the max. Basic tools to tuning my carb on my 351m. Don’t know anything about single or double or the parts. YouTube channels? Google? Links to food threads? Thx y’all.
If your 351m has the motorcraft 2150 carb, this should help. MOTORCRAFT 2150 (garysgaragemahal.com)
Welcome to FTE and good luck tuning that carb.
Post some pix if you have specific questions or issues of concern.
There's lots of knowledgeable people on this site who are eager to offer suggestions.
My suggestion in general. Make small changes to try and correct any issues your having. Then drive it for a day or two and retest. Trying to correct more than one thing at a time will keep you chasing your tail. Once get a understanding how it works you can predict the effect a change will have on the other part of the carb. Air/fuel ratio guage ans vacuum guage will make tuning a lot easier too.
I'd start out by making sure the ignition is rock-solid. New Motorcraft platinum plugs, new cap and rotor, new spark plug wires. For the wires I like BWD Select with SuperMag cores, or NGK. You can get a new set of NGK spiral core wires from Rockauto for about $30. Both of these wiresets I have used for years and they flat work. There's no power to be gained with ignition, but there is power to be lost. Then make sure your timing is where it should be. If you're not saddled with emission tests, try advancing the base setting about 4 degrees.
The next thing I'd do is throw out the 2-barrel carb and intake. You may want to use them to prop open a door, anchor a boat or something like that. The 2-barrel emission carb from the '70s or early '80s is basically not tunable. Any "tuning" to do on that carb is just trying to make the best of a bad situation. Only if you need emissions testing would I keep it. I'd run an Edelbrock Performer 400 intake or Weiand equivalent and a 600 Holley carb. Start with a new or factory refurbished carb. With the Holley or an Edelbrock if you prefer, you can tune. There are parts available and lots of info out there. Either of the two will run around on the front two barrels, only using the back two when you put your foot in it. Don't believe the naysayers.
But first get your ignition up to speed.
Best of Luck,
R.
