Hello every one , hope your enjoying a greasy day !!!!
I have a 78 F150 with a 351 M and a C6 . Took it to friends shop for oil change and was told had a leak but need to power wash to determine if it is oil pan at the back near tranny or if the tranny is the leak. Replaced the stamped tranny pan with a nice aluminum pan a while ago - fixed the wet look at the pan gasket - I know the O ring in the tranny at the speedo cable has a very small wet look .. My question is this, the Tranny dip stick has the ADD level and the FULL mark.. ( check - engine idling and tranny fluid hot - ) Need to add fluid but can anyone give me a general amount of tranny fluid that would be added - going from ADD to FULL hot on the stick . Will add very little at a time so as to NOT over fill . this will give me time to find any leak she may have and fix so she will run on ... My hope is the tranny still has a few more years in it before the cost of rebuild or replace. lol ..
Thanks for the info on the tranny fluid level everyone ...
IIRC, the quantity between add and full may be a pint. I'd go with a big blop, (1/4 cup or less) wait for it to drain out of the funnel and take another reading. As long as everything is the same between readings, it will be fairly stable so getting it right the first blop isn't super important while not over filling it is.

I thought was a quart, but it might be a pint sure'nuff .... but intruducing it "big blop by big blop" with checks after a short time between "big blop"s certainly seems a prudent plan. I had a manual copy here I thought, but I losted it.
Thanks to both of you , Yes small amount add and like always check level after it has drained down , then if need another blurp and repeat .. The amount of a pint does sound about right just had to get another opinion since have not added fluid in a while ,didn't need any . till now go figure - possible leak lol
My last truck was a '71 F100 , strait six 240 with a 300 head . three on the tree and 411 gear ratio rear end . Loved that truck ( it had the ignition on the left side of dash- yes I am a Lefty) , it was taken off the road when a toy truck blew thru a red and I T-BONED him and then flipped over...
Had to go find a new old friend = 78 F150
Could be leek, but check the vacuum modulator end of vacuum hose too.
2X check the modulator. I've had a couple leak on me. Pull the vacuum line from the modulator. Any fluid indicates a leak. It'll be small enough you won't see smoke but big enough that the level will drop over time.
The '76 owner's manual says to check it in park on level ground after the transmission is from 150F to 170F and after putting it in each range. It says anywhere between "add" and "full" is acceptable; best not to go above "full". But it doesn't say how much is required to go from add to full. It's probably best to go in small increments. I have to stand on something to check mine (in order to be sure the dipstick is fully seated).
