ECT/EOT temp confusion

Hi All,

I have another thread dealing with stand pipes and I'll update that one with pictures as soon as I can. Right now, the '05 is running great with new Ford standpipes installed yesterday. It already had Alliant injector o rings and HHC diesel nipple seals and new nipple cups.

I'm confused about these temps. It has a Mishimoto thermostat and housing installed and I haven't had any issues, to date. Pressure goes from zero to 10psi at operating temps and if I relieve pressure after it's up to temp then drive it hard, the psi barely moves. It has Rotella ELC coolant and the degas bottle is clear of any sludge. Coolant level is on the money.

My question is, why is my ECT reading so low? I'm thinking of getting a new stock thermostat and housing to install and maybe go back to the Mishimoto this winter.
I replaced the temp sensor last fall, certainly it wouldn't be bad already? May be a wiring or Edge issue?

EOT looks normal at around from 195 - 205 deg F with ambient at around 96 deg F. Hot and humid around here this time of year.

I replaced the oil cooler 6 years ago and it has always had great (<10 deg delta) and before the latest stand pipe issue, deltas were fine. Maybe I messed up some wires somewhere?

Here's a pic, let me know if any of you have had this issue.

Take an infrared gun and shoot the T/C housing.

Check the sensor readings cold, they should be close. Otherwise thermostat is stuck open.

I wouldn't worry about the ECT/EOT delta when you've got a stuck thermostat. When I bought my truck the Tstat was stuck at 175 and was running 190-195 EOT so I told the seller the truck was going to need an oil cooler. Once I replaced the Tstat the EOT runs right around 200 with a 190-192 ECT so oil cooler was actually good.

One other thing you can do to check the sensors themselves, is to swap them. They are the same sensor.

Another question for you all. I have the high temperature thermostat installed but I see that Mishimoto has both low and high temp. I installed the high temp because the stock Ford tstat would only get coolant up to 188 in the winter.

The Mishi has always run at about 202 most times but +2 or 3 in hotter weather. Should I stick with that? Opinions are appreciated.

Thanks,

Jim

If you tow heavy in the heat, go stock or the Mishi 185. I have the Mishi 185 because I tow heavy in the summer. It doesn't fully open until about 200 anyway.. My ECT touches 220 when pulling long hills....then my truck wants to grow wings because that turboprop right behind the radiator kicks in.
