i have been hearin that not enough back pressure can wear down on ur engine quickly. well AFTER i cut out my glass pak ive been hearin this and ive never really understood what back pressure does exaclty for ur engine. can some one please help me understand what it does and also if not havin a glass pak will effect my engine. its the stock exhaust so its single and the tip ends amost flush with the back of the cab.
thanks for ur help
someone correct me if im wrong. but i think back pressure is when the exhaust gases can't flow out properly and this keeps the engine from getting fresh air and etc. like it should and interferes with combustion.
I have never heard that. Backpressure is needed...to an extent. It all has to do with the exhaust gases maintaining enough velocity to make it to the tailpipe. How do you keep velocity? Run either smaller pipes, or a bit more restrictive muffler. Since you have cut the 'pack out, do you plan on putting anything else in its place, or run straight pipes? You should be fine either way with the stock exhaust.

Not quite. Back pressure is NEVER desirable. It is an unfortunate by-product of the necessity of maintaining gas velocity. A more restrictive muffler doesn't promote velocity, it only robs power.
Since pressure drop is a function of pipe diameter^4 and velocity is a function of diameter^2, small changes in diameter can yield big changes in pressure. An exhaust system that is large enough to give good flow velocity at 6000 RPM will be too large to give gooat 2000 RPM and low rev performancemay suffer. That is the origin of the "engines require backpressure" myth.
yea im just gonna leave it a strat pipe. theres about 2 ft of pipe after it comes the 2 manifolds come into one pipe, if that makes sense. the pipe is 2 1/4 inch dia. so would what i have be better for high revs or low....this back pressure stuff is intresting.
I am completely at a loss now to figure out how this board works. Is there any list of common netiquite rules it is OK to utterly ignore on this particular board, or is it something you learn from experience around here?
Your problem is what?
There doesn't appear to be any problem with this thread. Question asked, open discussion, no flames or anger involved, answers evolving. Pretty normal.
hey im just an innocent kid tryin to get some info on backpressure lol. i couldnt seem to find ne on like google or w/e so i figured this was my best bet.

Heck no it never crossed my tiny mind !!
Duuuuuuh
I would have expected the Admin message to say: "Moved *here* from . . " because it addressed engine performance, I figured it had been moved to the "engines" area.
