Question egr

96 F-150 4x4 / 300-6 with a little over 100,000 miles. Check engine light off & on, went to Autozone, code said EGR valve is stuck open. How hard is this to replace? Is it easy enough for a do-it yourselfer? What else do I need to know if I change this my self? Fuel economy is lousy, lack of power and truck starting to stutter, will the EGR cause this problem.

I think it just pops right in. not sure. If you have a haynes manual check that.

I have to find this out myself, cause i gotta know where the stupid thing is to block it off!

The EGR is right behind the alternator and is attached to the intake manifold with 2 bolts and has a pipe coming out of the bottom of it. To block it off, remove the 2 bolts and pull the EGR back from the manifold. Use the gasket as a template for the block off plate. Be sure to use substantial metal for the plate, not beer can or aluminum as they will burn through in no time.

This may sound a little dumb. but what is the purpose of blocking this off? shouldn't the valve be replaced.

Just replace the valve... you can block it off to save money is all. Then you'll always have the SES light on for the EGR failure.

Blocking it off can fix problems with bad idle and such.

All that the valve does is controll exhaust comming back into the engine to mix with the air.
In my opinion, putting bad air into the chamber would create a worse reaction with the Fuel/Air mixture.
So when you block it off, it stops the return of this which can cause rough idle's to stop and slugish accelleration and such.

Yeah total elimination can do that if your EGR valve is leaking and the rest of the system is not working correctly.

I am going to make a limiting plate by years end for my truck. Like the gasket that goes betwen them well I am going to simply make a piece similar to the block off plate but with a smaller hole going into the intake...around 3/16" or so I what I will do. Should keep the advantages of EGR, but none of its drawbacks.

Sorry I was not paying attention. You have an inline six and I was thinking V8. Oh well, nobody died, anyway, blocking the EGR off eliminates some drivability problems such as a miss I had when climbing hills. Apparantly dumping exhaust back into the intake upset the engine a bit and it responded by loosing power. From what I have read over the years in these forums I understand that the I-six likes a small amount of exhaust gas as opposed to being blocked completely off. A small hole, maybe 1/16th inch or so should do. The only problem I see here is that the material yo use shouold be fairly thick or the hole will eventually enlarge itself from gas flow. I originally used stainless steel shim stock that was slightly thicker than a tin can and blocked my V8 right off. A year later the symptoms re-appeared and I removed the plate to find that the exhaust has blown a hole right through plate. I replaced it with much thicker material, approximately.075 in. and all is well now.

So blocking the EGR valve would help out in power? Any negative results?

Should be no negative results.

I'm geussing i need to make a plate like the gasket, and just put it in where the gasket would go and a gasket on both sides of the plate?

Do i need longer bolts?

The bolts are long enough as long as you use plate material that is under 1/16th inch. I didn't drill holes either, I just cut across from the sides and up from the bottom of the plate so it is a drop in fix. If you make it with a tab at the top you can remove it by just loosening the bolts which is good it you are going to take it in for certification or trouble shooting. I have had no ill effects from doing this but the drivability has greatly improved, especially when going up hill.

Well I think I solved the dilema (sp?) w/ the EGR.. I went and talked to friend of mine who works at the ford dealership around home he said take a BB and put in the GREEN wire that attaches to the EGR and shove back on the EGR and don't worry about it..But if you want too make a plate use a 1/4" hole.. just thought I would pass the word along
