Solved everything but this.....

Ordering today, (if I get off work on time) ... Setup: towing 8k-9k 30ft. TT, 10 month season, moving once a week-ish. Tongue wt. is a factor @ #1200-ish, unhooked fuel economy is a factor,
ride quality for my "cruise director" is a factor,

I've resolved everything else regarding configuration and options, but am getting an ulcer over the following choices.
1. F-250 4x2 STX SCLB 7.3 w/4.30 MSRP $47,521 OTD
2. F-350 4x2 STX SCLB 7.3 w/3.73 MSRP $48,361 OTD

and a distant 3rd choice
3. F-350 4x4 STX SCLB6.2 3.73LS MSRP $49,519 OTD

The floor is yours.................

Is the F-350 7.3 available with the 4.30 gears? If so, that is where my head would be at, mainly to have the truck setup for the next trailer which may be a fiver. From what has been posted here by other embers it seems like the 4.30s reduce MPGs by about 1 over the 3.73s. And like always your personal driving style has a lot to do with your fuel mileage, I think those that think about it more drive with it in mind and see better numbers as a result.

Ditto on the 350 with 4.3. If not available, order it, but then again my opinion may be biased!

yes sir, it is available, $390 option, which I know isn't much more, 3.73 is standard. I can bump down to the 250, and all it costs me is a leaf spring.

You really think the 4.30 behind a 10 sp will make that big a difference over 3.73? If so, I'll choose the 250, and the extra leaf spring will be the trade off.

The standard F-250 without the optional camper package is fitted with three-leaf rear springs. The F-350 with 18” wheels (included in STX pkg.) is fitted with five-leaf rear springs with or without the optional CP.

The problem with the F-350 4x2 is the largest factory tires are LT275/65R18E. These limit the rear GAWR to 6830 lbs. A solution is to swap the tires at/after delivery to LT275/70R18E and unofficially increase the rear GAWR to 7280 lbs.
Your dealer can reprogram the truck for the larger tires.

This is the mod we made to our 2019 F350 CCSB 4x2 6.2 4.30, and it effectively changes the axle ratio to ~4.10.

HTH,
Jim / crewzer

I would skip the F250 just for the load carrying ability on paper. If you decide later to get a 5th wheel you might be over weight with a F250, I was.

Agreed. The F-350 is more future-proof.

I prefer the CCLB so I can get the 48 gallon fuel tank. Out here in the west, the extra fuel makes a big difference. No need for a transfer tank or to carry jugs of fuel.

At least on 2016, the rear axle has a higher rating than the 250. Besides that and the overload springs there was not much difference between the two.

This is where your problem will be. I've never been in a HD truck that rode great...it's just that trade-off for the capacities we want.

But the good news is that the ride difference between the F-250 and the F-350 is close to zero. My stock shocks were bad enough that my wife noticed and authorized an upgrade. The Rancho 9000XL shocks are working well.

Just put on Cooper at3 xlt’s. Made a world of difference in the ride compared to the original Continentals that had 65,000 on them. Changing shocks,KYB’s, made virtually no difference that I could tell. You will never get the ride of a 71 Marquis!

I recently traded my F250 6.2 for a 350 STX with the 7.3 and 3.73's - I couldn't be happier with the truck. I am about 9K loaded for camping and I have never had a better tow experience. IF I was ordering the truck instead of buying off the lot I would go with the 4:30's as others have said just to be ready to bigger but honestly, I am not at all disappointed with the 3.73's...

If you don’t need a 4x4 for unhitched uses, then my pick would be #2. The 7.3 is a mammoth beast with the HP and torque it gives over the 6.2. The 10 speed is nice too and while I am not pulling a 9k weighted TT, it would without reservation I assure you. In fact, my plan is to get a lighter Fiver in the future and that is why I bought the 7.3 to begin with. The TT is essentially the gateway drug to camping….LOL

NOW I didn’t opt for long bed as really not needed for the most part in my world and to be honest, the short bed still sticks out of parking places everywhere I go. Not sure how the long bedders do it when not much parking is available!

Good luck.

100% in agreement. You don’t buy a HD or SD or whatever nomenclature they give them for Cadillac ride quality, they are at the end of the day, work trucks! Once people get their heads around that, they love em.
