X2 on old inner tube, canvas, conveyer belt or old ratchet strap material. Remember any material that can hold moisture, can lead to rusting. Heck even rubber can trap moisture. Here is the PO hack job, yes I think that is bondo in there. And yes the tank held for quite a while them started leaking in the rear passenger side corner. Coat the underside of the tank with some DIY roll on bed liner or spray undercoating BEFORE you put the straps back up.
Yes I used old ratchet strap, because I did not know any better at the time. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/o...hoCQwAQAvD_BwE
That was a great point about the roll/spray-on liner, 78&79 f250. I'm changing both tanks. The rear is 38 gallons and I had to delete the spare tire holder. Tired of it. The side hasn't been used in ...10+ years and thought it'd be easier to replace than restore.
But tanks are on back order until October!! Grumble. I'm going on a long trip and wanted to have a working fuel gauge to calculate mpg.
Thanks for all the ideas/responses about the straping material.
