I've done it in my 71 but it's behind a 351w. They did'nt make an AOD that that'll fit behind an FE. You might be able to find a swap kit to do the swap.
I love mine behind the 351w, I put 3.70 gears in so I have the best of both worlds. I just installed a stree/strip valve body and it shifts a whole lot better than the old c-6

CACWBY, a user here wit ha nice lowereed 67 is running a Lentech A0D and Lentech adapter behind his hopped up 390. You'll need the adapter and probably need t have the A0D built up to handle the torque of the 390....It's not a cheap process.

As GTEX pointed out - I have done this - and though not a no brainer- it's a great upgrade. Have to have the adapter, shorten the driveshaft, relocate transmount, need a floor shifter, and the TV cable, and someone to dial in adjustments. But you can cruise 75mph at 2300rpm ( and I changed rear to 3.73 from stock). I have 5300 miles on mine since May 03. One of the better mods I did, though had several leaks, and just now finally put a cast aluminum trans pan on it, and now no leaks, and has 1qt more capacity so should help run cooler. Be sure to use a trans cooler that gets some air flow. .
You don't say if you are running the original Cruiseamatic or have upgraded to C-6. What do you have now? If you do have a C-6, I'd just spend the money on a Gear Vendors unit. If not then check out Len Tech, and I believe another co. also doing an adapter for this (Performance Automatics?). I read a lot of magazines and I know Ive seen a couple companies doing this now, but not sure of names. Good Luck.
Thanks for the info. I understand about the adaptor plate and the cost involved. I put a Manual Overdrive in my classic Mustang and love it. The truck has a 390 with a C-6 in it. I'm planning to stroke the 390 so GTEX info on that subject would help. I will use the truck for show and to haul my car and enclosed Hauler to car shows. I have an 88 F250 with a 351W that I beefed up and a ZF trans and the weight of the car hauler and car kills me. So that is my reasoning for upgrading the 71.
Check the FE Forum for info on stroking a 390. There are several options, including the SCAT stroker cranks for FE motors. Stroking is a good way to get a little more torque and at a lower RPM.
If you are a good bargain hunter, you can scrounge around for a 428 crank to make a 410 out of your 390. This would be the least expensive plan.
Again, I reccomend you search the FE forum. This is a popular topic in there.
