Replace C6 Pan and Gasket

Transmission was leaking a bit and I got tied of cleaning up the spots so I decided to swap it out today.

Pan had a good amount of metal and gray in the bottom of the pan (chunks are from the old gasket)

Filter looked terrible - had metal on both side of the screen which is concerning (although it seems to drive fine, just leaky).

Glad I bought a new one...

Put a new WIX in. (See the blue NA tag...any idea what that is/means? )

The original pan had a dent in it (not OEM) and rough around the edges so I got a replacement pan. I wanted an alum pan with OEM capacity but couldn't find one that didn't cost a fortune (most were +2 Pint versions which I also didn't want) so this was the cheapest option. Didn't want chrome either but was the most readily available one - I'll run it through some mud to take the shine off.

I used a Lube Locker gasket on it - I had great luck with their Dana44 gasket so I got one for the the C6. Expensive but I think a much better tier of gasket than the typical ones.

I can't tell you how much fun it was getting the back 3 bolts in above the 4x4 cross member - I spent as much time on the last 2 bolts as I did on everything else! I now have a pan with a drain plug in it now that I hope to never have to use.

Q: Anybody know what that 87 stamped in the upper right corner of the pic mean?

Transmission looked to be clean on the inside and I suspect rebuilt about 8-10 years ago.

Fluid: Transmission came OEM with the Dex/Merc so that's what I put back in it. I contemplated going Merc V since i was draining the Torque Converter and Radiator + supplemental cooler) I put about 11.75 quarts back in it - drove it around tonight and will check tomorrow for leaks and fluid levels. Seems to shift pretty smooth.

(I did realize after I got done that I forgot to put a magnet in the pan Dang it! . I'm thinking of putting one of those old computer hard disk magnets (very strong) on the outside by the drain plug)

I put the same trans pan on my C6 also. I had bought one of the deep aluminum pans from B&M, but soon found out that they will not work with 4x4 trucks. The pan will sit on the cross-member and obviously that wont work. After ready through your post I realized that I had forgotten to put a magnet inside of my trans pan too . Guess that I will just do the same that you have planned and put one on the outside. It is nice having an actual drain plug now though, no clue what the engineers were thinking on that one.

I have a speaker magnet (also very strong) outside of the pan next to the drain plug.

I remove the magnet just prior to draining the oil during a service, so any metal wear and tear particles flush out with the oil.

Yeah, it's nice having a drain plug !!

I also have magnets on the engine oil filter and sump pan.

I was thinking that having the magnet on the outside of the pan might be a better idea since you can do exactly what you said (pull the magnet off prior to drain to get all the metal out!).

Yee computer hard drive magnet

Tucked up next to drain !

I've been driving on it pretty hard and lubelocker gasket doing its job (no leaks) on this pan. I do have a leak higher up and further back I need to find.

I recall a buddy once saying about leaks that they were perpetual fluid changers. I once had a 'Chevelle SS that run like a scalded dog, but it's 396 did leak some oil that got sprayed around by windage, friends teased me for not cleaning the mess off. I told them it run too good to disturb. I cleaned it by swapping in a 454 I built secretively, added Corvette Tri Power too, it run even better then after that clean up. Once I parked my Triumph next to a few HDs at a dealership, I overheard a HD t-shirt wearing guy comment on my Triumph after he laid down to look, that "it leaks" I told them that if it ain't leaking, one better be checking the oil.

Trans pan gaskets ... I need to get one. Been meaning to check into those thick great reuseable ones like I have on some 4R70 or 75 transmissions. I already have a drain on my lone C-6.
