Transmission Pan Magnet

I was thinking about adding a second magnet to my transmission pan but the transmission fluid temperature seems like it would require a Neodymium grade H/SH magnet or possibly a Samarium Cobalt magnet.

Does anyone know what kind of magnet comes stock in our truck?

I’m expecting to be told a second magnet is not necessary but I am curious.

Why not add a magnefine filter on the hot line going to the trans cooler like many other members have. Get filtration and a magnet in one

I’ve got a Magnefine I believe on the return line.

I actually just bought a new one which I hope to install in the near future. I’ll be dissecting it to see what if anything got trapped in there.

I have 1 on the hot side of the cooler and change it 1x per year regardless of mileage. It’s incredible how much of the super fine materials that the Raytheon Raybestos filter catches.

Colorado350 - did your transmission ever fail?

I believe mine did and when Ford warrantied the transmission it put the filter on the return side to catch any remaining junk in the system.

Someone please let me know if I’m incorrect.

I’m planning on installing a 6.0 cooler so maybe I should put one on the hot side also as long as that won’t cause too much of a restriction in flow.

The general consensus is to install the filters on the hot side as it filters out whatever trash is in the oil before going to the trans cooler.
if fitted after trans cooler the stuff you want filtered out has already gone into the cooler and possibly got stuck or gummed it up.
Not sure on other filters flow rates but Magnefine Filters have very little restriction

For future readers searching to buy an inline magnetic transmission filter, the term to search for is Raybestos, not Raytheon. The Raybestos unit is a knock off of the Magnefine. Similar to, but not identical in the internal design.

Unless you are looking to mount an Aim 9 short range Sidewinder missile under the truck... to better persuade other motorists that your use of turn signals does not mean "speed up and fill in the space". In that case, Raytheon IS the term you want.

Yup, I’ll go back and fix damn autocorrect…but the missile idea, I like it. I’ve had several Magnefine filters that leaked that’s why I switch to the Raybestos, so far I’ve had very good luck.

Yes, it failed about 5 months after I installed the 6.0L cooler and Magnefine filter. We opened up the Magnefine filter at at the transmission shop. It was packed full of materials with the consistency of A slimy mush. They were able to save the new transmission cooler in part because of the filter.

Did you have the factory cooler bypass or a bypass delete at the time of failure?

No, the P.O. put a transmission in the truck but apparently didn’t replace the TC and that’s what actually failed…

TC got mine too. And the PO previously had it rebuilt with billet faced converter at that. I assume his failure was due to the mechanical diode in my model year.

Thanks to all that have responded.

I’ve decided to place a Magnefine right before the line enters the bottom of the radiator and to put a spin on filter (see SpringerPop’s page) along the return line. Hopefully that doesn’t cause too much of a restriction.

As a follow up, does anyone know what kind of magnet was used at the bottom of the transmission pan?

$40?

For a magnet?

That's not a very attractive price.
