Just purchased a 97 ford super duty. Have had to do many repairs already in the month of owning it. It's a wrecker/tow truck. 5speed stock everything. Looking to get a bit more power/mpg without sacrificing reliability. Truck will be constantly pulling heavy loads. Thinking s and b intake system to start. Any suggestions?
5 speed 2wd 203k miles all stock. Very heavy truck
It's a good thing to get everything fresh filters and fluids to start. There are a handful of decent intakes. A good downpipe and tuner will really help wake the truck up

How hard is downpipe to install? What's best tuner? Had ts 6 position way back in the day. Edge any good? Don't have gauges yet so thinking of a monitor
Stay away from Edge. They seem to make ok tunes for other vehicles, but their tunes for. 7.3 are not a good choice.
I would do a 6637 intake. It is easy and provides lots of air.
Do a down pipe. If you get the two piece variety they are fairly straight forward to install. Just be ready to modify the pinch weld a little depending on how tight the clearance is.
I have a spare ts-6 with Dp tuner tunes if you are interested. Just shoot me a PM
congrats on getting a Superduty. They are definitely built to work. Does it have aluminum or steel wheels?
We can sell you a hydra tuner. Stock calibrations will be fine for now, or you can order custom tunes and update them when we build you new injectors. Don't expect any mpg increases with any upgrade.
Mpg will increase with some mods such as downpipe and intake but as stated don’t expect much. Especially if you’re a truck lover. The sound is just too good
Diamond eye 2 piece downpipe was very easy and straight forward to put in. Also agree with the hydra tuner and a 6637 filter. Riffraff has a Donaldson blue filter to fit that setup that I liked a lot better than Napa’s. Bitterroot might have something like that as well. Definitely egt and boost gauges or as you said an edge monitor would be a must for a tow rig. If you feel like spending some money an electric fuel setup is awesome on these trucks too
Probably get intake first then gauges I suppose. After that I will look into getting a tuner. I had someone else tell me I should get a wicked wheel for the turbo? Worth doing?
We have Isspro gauges, s&b intakes and also sell edge, banks etc. I can likely have Clay ship you a 6637 if your wanted. A great budget friendly choice.
Nothing wrong w a TS6 reflashed with good tunes. About $250 into mine only. Works fine. Hydra is far better, but you have bigger fish to fry first to me.

This truck is gonna be expensive I can tell. Only owned the truck for 2 months and already had to rebuild parking brake assembly, replace fuel tank, calipers, rotors, wheel bearings, map sensor, and rebuild the wheel lift. Still have to fix the oil dipstick tube flange and replace the slave cylinder.
I do believe my uppipes are leaking. Smell exhaust every now and then through the vents. How big of a job is up pipes? Does transmission have to come out?
