replacement drive shaft recomendations

yep, I have a bent drive shaft. its bent right after the carrier bearing. 2 piece drive shaft. 2019 f-450 drw 4wd. truck is lifted and has 37 on 22.5 wheels so not a warranty path to get fixed.

looking for options ...wondering is there are stronger aftermarket options.

also, any good sources for stock OEM parts in case I go that route.

thanks

The stock shaft is plenty, any driveshaft can get bent if it meets impact.

You sure it's not the angle now because you jacked the truck up? My 96 F250 had a vibration after the 2 AAL kit I added in front. I had a custom CV driveshaft made and it took care of the problem. Looking into it now for you...

this is how bad the spline section twisted

replacement shaft is the whole shaft at a. OST of 1200. Should be here Tuesday.

I had to cut it to get it off and then it sprung out….scary

mat least the install will be easy.

On the Nissan Titans with a 2 piece driveshaft, when they were lifted guys often put in a carrier bearing drop bracket to minimize the angle difference.

I saw that, that some had fabbed up a custom drop bracket for the carrier bearing like you mentioned, after lifting the truck when I looked into this for my own info.

The other issue that could come with a lift is the driveshaft becomes too short. A spacer is needed to take up the slack. So many issues with lifts. Glad mine came from the factory already a skyscraper.

Great info

so yes, I had 37”s on 22’s with a 2.5 lift in the front and no lift change in the back at the time the shaft twisted. I was debating o. The size of lift for the back and had ordered different sizes.

the shaft twisted when I floored it racing a new Camaro . After that I noticed a vibration.

The next day I started the new lift install ….taking out the level kit and putting in a 5” kit.

that’s when I noticed the twisted shaft.

the spline area was twisted so bad that the shaft would not come out with out cutting it.

I got the shaft out , orderd a new one which will be here Tuesday .

installed the lift and everything is ready for the shaft install.

I have some new carrier bearing drop kits which I ordered in different sizes and when the shaft comes in I need to do some analisys to see which spacer I need to use.

I thought the carrier bearing drop kit would be simple but after watching a few YouTube videos on the subject …this is more of an art than a science.

I theory you want some angles on both ends of the shaft and ideally the angle degrees should be equals as possible but one should ideally be reverse of the other ….else you lose the vibration cancellation .

so basically the carrier bearing spacers need to be put in to adjust the correction of obtaining the correct angle relationship. These shaft angles relationships has become pretty interesting.

had I not viewed these videos, I would have mistakenly tried to get a straight line , which would have resulted in less vibration cancelation.

I’m not sure if the shaft length is a concern yet until I get the new on and figure out how much travel are in the splines of the shaft.

interestingly, you can’t buy just the section that twisted ….I have a two piece shaft and the section that twisted is the section between the carrier bearing and the axle. To replace that section, Ford sells an entire new shaft drive line …rear shaft bolted to new carrier bearing with the front section bolted to it. These are balance as a unit and sold that way. This explains why there are a few front sections for sale as used items on eBay.

This may be a dumb question, but if the rear wasn't modified, why not try to get it warrantied?

Hey fritz, couldn't you have gone to driveshaft repair shop and have them build you what you needed? Or even sell it cheaper I wonder?

1. the wheels were not stock

2. my local Ford has a multi month waiting list for warranty work. I would have to take it to another state .

3. the towing charge to tow it out of state would have been over half the cost of the new shaft. Factor in loss of my time etc.

My '15 is setting at Ford waiting on new driveshaft under extended warranty. I dropped it off Monday, they just got to it today, and parts won't be here until middle of next week. I had a vibration around 75 mph on interstate and when I crawled under the truck to check ujoints I discovered a lot of slop from the slip joint going into rear of transfer case. So, instead of replacing the slip joint they are replacing the complete driveshaft. That doesn't make sense. Back in the day it was order the new slip joint and replace it on driveshaft along with ujoint.

these drive shafts are balanced as a single unit....you cant buy as sub componets.
