injector question

i have a 1997 f250 5.8 w/ 470,000 miles on it.Valve covers never been off of motor! Question, I would like to somehow service, clean, replace the injectors. Not having a problem but with that many miles on the motor
i know they are worn or need to be cleaned. I use berryman b-12 with my gas. Any thought or suggestions, thanks

The injectors are easy to get to but you'll have to remove the top intake plenum first. Then remove the fuel rails. The injectors just pull right out. I don't think that I'd mess with them at all if they seem to be working and the engine is running ok. Many years ago people thought that electronic fuel injectors were going to be a big thing for maintenance. This turned out to be nearly 100% false. I've seen them stuck from old gas and I've seen them leak where the body is put together but that's about it.

dave tks!, i was thinking of having a injection cleaning done. they connect a machine up to your fuel rail and run cleaner in for a certain amont of time. thinking that kind of service might be good. i really didnt want to tear into it.

I don't think that it'll hurt anything. Several years ago my wife's Honda Civic acted really weird on a cold start. It cranked over sort of like it had no compression. I checked it out and the timing belt was fine. A customer of mine who has a shop said that it might have had an injector hang open and flood the engine. He suggested cranking it with the throttle floored to clear the flood and after a while it started and acted just like it had been flooded. It ran fine up to his shop where we did one of those same cleaning cycles were it runs on the stuff. After that it hasn't ever had a problem again. Who knows but he said that he had seen that before on a Honda.
