Thought for the day....

Many Decades ago, and old Codger standing outside a downtown coffee shop said to us young guys cooling it before a Movie opened up, that we would always remember the girls that got away.

Veteran's Day Mementos.
These are a couple of memories of my dad. The lower one is his dog tag. Like so many that grew up in the 30s and 40s, he was working in the family business by the time he was an adult and later joined the service. One of his many gifts was that he was a natural born leader. He rose from buck private to master sergeant in a single hitch, with enough time left to do a tour in Korea. (More about that below.)
The upper token is a quarter with a heck of a story. After he'd earned his Master Sergeant stripes, dad and another MS were called into the CO's office. It was explained to the two guys that one of them, and his unit, would be going to Korea. When asked if either one wanted to volunteer there was just silence. The officer took a quarter out of his pocket, flipped it, and barked "call it". I don't remember who made the call, but dad won the flip and stayed stateside while the other guy took his men to Korea. Dad was given the quarter and the ring was attached. A silver chain completed the necklace. That quarter's got a special significance to me, too. If dad loses that coin flip he's in Korea that fall and I'm never conceived or born!
