I need some advice on changing the auto tranny fluid on my '02 F-350 PSD. I was thinking of going to a Valvoline quick lube to have the tranny flushed, then have them replace the fluid with Durablend semi-sythetic,or do it myself using Mobil 1 ATF. Do I really have to flush the tranny,or can just draining the pan and torque converter be good enough? The truck has 44k miles. Thanks.
My question is, how many miles are on your truck??? If you have over 30,000 miles then yes, u should flush the whole system, that way you can get every bit of the OLD ATF out of it. It doesnt really make sense to drain the fluid out of the oil pan and the torque converter, because u will still have some old fluid in all your lines. If you wanna have a lasting tranny, i would suggest flushing the whole system.
Good luck.

The place I go to won't touch a tranny if the truck has 75,000 + on it. That made me curious, real curious. The guys who built my transmission said that draining the torque converter and the pan was good enough. Plus if you have an external filter that too should be changed. May get pricey but why do it half "muled." This advice only comes from having my original tranny flushed before a short trip to New Orleans. I thought about it long and hard in Jackson while waiting for the wrecker. I too would like to get all that stuff out of there but I don't believe a little would hurt.
Horsecop,
Sounds like you have had your share of tranny problems.
Any recommendations on the oil?
Synthetic? Amsoil? Mobil? Mercon?
Mag-Hytec tranny pan?
I have 28K and was wondering whether to do it myself or have a shop do it?
I've never had a problem with Mercon and the guys at suncoast put it in the Proloc. That's just my opinion. Trust me, I know what it smells like hot! The tranny came with Mag-Hytec on it. More fluid, the better cooling. I got my cooler from DIS. As far as who does the work, I like to see how things work. Check for leaks etc. I don't like to hear how things work. That's just me also. If you know someone who does that for a living and let you watch that would be cool. Folks that advise you to sit in the waiting room, I'd be careful of. Good talking to ya HeatStroked. Read alot of your posts.
I just ordered a mag-hytec tranny pan and will probably go to Cottman transmissions for a fluid change and pan install for $75.00. They say to use Mercon and change every 15-20K out here in Phoenix.
Sounds like a good deal and no mess!
