86 F250 Head Light Switch

About 3 years ago I replaced the Head Light switch because turning the **** for the
Dome light was stiff and hard. Think it was a Standard brand switch.

Well a few months back my Wife noticed the park lights on around midnight. I go out
the front door to along side the Garage, and the lights are off. She nuts or something?
Iam about 10ft from the truck and they come on. As I grab the door handle they go off.
Gremlins in this thing? They only come on if the **** is pulled out the first click. But now
maybe 1/16" and they come on.

I removed the dash Pad and removed the plastic panel for the cluster, and don`t have it
screwed back down. Was under the Dash trying to figure out why I have the heat in
summer and not much in winter, but that is another subject ....
But Iam thinking the heating of the dash etc, moves the plastic enough to put the lights on.
But there is something faulty to make them come on w/o pulling to the first click.

I was looking at Bronco Grave yard and out of stock, e-bay,and others, Google search etc...
Prices $11 and something to $27 for the same brand, and there is shipping. O`Rielly`s is $22
and I can drive there not problem. But I noticed Home Depot has them listed also For $11.20
with a total for $12.13...wow best price anywhere.

Subtotal $11.20 Shipping FREE Sales Tax $0.80 Order Total $12.00

So maybe HD will take care of our automotive needs now.

Huh, never thought of HD for parts. If they’re competitive what the heck eh. Maybe with more competition prices won’t be through the roof and parts will be easier to get.

I replaced my headlight switch with a Napa unit, and within a year the dome light wouldn’t come on when you turned it all the way. Kinda sucked because I put a nice led in the dome and it lit up well. I’d like to get a clear lens cover, as half the light is blocked by the opaque cover. Probly don’t even need an led, just ditch the cover lol

yea i took my cover off and with the reg bulb its plenty bright... my headlight switches( as ive bought 3 with no fix) have always given me trouble all the way in turns the parking lights on out will turn headlight on but no parking lights so you have to find the happy spot to turn head and parking lights on at the same time... 2 replacement switches same results so its gotta be somewhere in the wiring but i havent had the time or patience to find it LOL

when changing the switch, be sure to change the pigtail too. the plug melts from heat in the switch causing all kinds of problems.
when i change the switch, i also remove headlight power from the switch by installing relays and power the headlights through the relay directly to battery. then the headlight switch only turns the relays on/off, and have no real current running through them to melt things.

Picked up my new Head light switch tonight from HD.
Was shipped from Merville,Tn. to Carson City w/o any shipping.
Get home open box, and the ceramic piece for the dome/Instrument
lights is broke in two. Shipped in a box about 8" square w/o and packing
around the switch box. So got banged around on it`s way west.
So back to HD tomorrow afternoon.

Here is a good write up from Daniel Sterns Lighting on wiring in a Relay..

Charmalu, decades ago a guy on another IDI site who worked at Napa said for our failure prone light switches, you have to buy the more expensive Echlin Napa one. I did so many years ago and never had a problem with it plus I tow trailers with lots of lights. The correct Napa switch eliminates the trouble of going the relay route.
