31s?

I plan on getting 31s BFGs M/Ts for my explorer, which is stock. Will that take away much out of the SOHC 4.0L? Will the extra weight and size of the tire hold alright? I't s a 2001 explorer sport 4x2.

Well, what is the stock size tire you have on their now? What is the current gearing? 5 speed auto? You sure you can fit 31"s stock (I dont know, I am asking)?

The current stock tires are Michelin LTX M/S P235/75R15SL the rims are 15X7.0J. It's a 5-speed auto, and the low/high gear ratio is 3.40:1/.79:1. Now what do you think, will the 31 fit good and will it be alright to drive with it? They have a warning label on the door that says, High performance tires and bigger sized tires might increase the amount of rollover. So what's your take?

I am assuming those figures are youre transmission ratios, correct? What is youre rear end ratio? I believe a 235 is around a 26" tire. I would have to think you would notice the drop in power immediatly. I have driven rangers before, and wasnt impressed with their power from the factory. As for rollover and things, so long as you increase height proportionally to tire width, you shouldnt have any issues.

How much of a drop in power are we talking about here? Any ideas or estimates? I don't race it and I don't haul anything with it, but I don't wanna lose so much power as to where a redlight turns green all the v4s are passing me.

I do not know. This is really a question that should be posted into the expy forum. You might even want to ask the ranger guys, since they are basically the same vehicle.

I thought mud terrains were the best in terms of sand and mud than the All terrains.

yes, mud terrains will definatly be better in the sand then the all terains. Also, 235's are 29 inch tall tires, so you are increasing about 2 inches in height. If they fit, i do not think you will see a substaintial amount of power loss. Maybe a little bit. Those exploreres usally have 4.10 gear rear axles, even the 302 trucks. A full size bronco has only 3.55 or 3.08 geras and has 31 inch tires stock. If those tires fit it would be a pretty mean looking explorer. thats my 5 cents to help you out.

Thanks bud, first positive feedback about them tires in a while, and yeah they're definitely going in, the sploder already looks pretty rad, I got brushguard, tail light guards, foglights, cb/pa system, have a magnetic mount antenna that I hate, soon to get a whip....
