I Have a 1992 F250 which has the 3-speed auto gearbox driven by a 351 Windsor motor. I wanted to get a better top speed and was thinking of finding a 4-speed auto gearbox. What box is the best and easiest to get hold of that fits the best?
You mostly have two options. The AOD/AODE/4R70W, or the E4OD/4R100 All of these will require you to have the matching ECM, or a standalone Transmission Controller, as they're fully computer controlled transmissions, with the exception of the AOD.
AFAIK, the only application in which Ford mated the AOD to the 351W was in a few years of the Crown Vic, and you *need* that proper flexplate to make it work, as the 5.0 or 4.9 Flexplates aren't balanced properly for a 5.8
Most of your junkyard options, for grabbing all the stuff and swapping it, are going to be E4OD.
That doesn't get into any sort of conversion transmission you can get like a GM based unit from a vendor like TCI that will bolt up to your 351W.
