Never seen that. You'd better have a look to see if something has made a home and plugged up the tailpipe. Would hate to can opener another new muffler.
Yes the ol rolling down a long hill in gear turn, the key off, build up back pressure, turn on key and ignite the build up. BAM. Also hear it is a great way to suck a valve. Now if you have a back fire while in the starting process, you definitely have a choke or carb issue.
Runny rich maybe? Work had an old Chevy with a manual choke that people didn't know how to start (since it wasn't fuel injection). One guy flooded the hell out of the truck but didn't give up. If final started and ignited the fuel that built up in the exhaust... It blew the muffler up just like that!
Knew someone years back who delighted in creating backfires in his old Pontiac by turning the engine off while coasting at about 30mph in gear... when he turned the ignition back on it made a very satisfactory boom, especially when in between two dorms which faced each other across the road. Eventually he did exactly that to his muffler, opened it up as if he meant to.
